Shaping Your Ideal Figure

VASER IS AN ACRONYM THAT STANDS for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Essentially a third generation ultrasound-assisted liposuction, lipoplasty and liposculpture procedure, “standard” VASER allows for effects similar to traditional liposuction: e.g. body contouring, fat reduction and so on.

In recent years, however, advances in medical science have extended the “standard” VASER procedure, refining it into what is commonly known as “high-definition” VASER. In the hands of a skilled cosmetic surgeon, high-definition VASER allows a skilled surgeon to sculpt athletic-looking bodies through the precise removal of superficial fat. Not only can excess fat be removed through high-definition VASER, the surgeon is also able to create the appearance of “six-pack” abs, defined pectorals and so on.

One of the main advantages of VASER is that it enables the surgeon to selectively melt and remove fat while still sparing nearby blood vessels, nerves and other important subcutaneous structures. As a result, VASER procedures have minimal bruising, swelling and pain when compared to conventional liposuction techniques. VASER also allows better contouring and smoother results, and is especially useful when applied to patients who have undergone previous liposuction or surgeries in that part of the body.

VASER can be used on any part of the body with a layer of subcutaneous fat that can be easily pinched. Popular areas include the face, arms, tummy and thighs. However, as with any specialist surgical procedure, it would be safest to seek the opinion of a qualified plastic surgeon for a detailed assessment. Although relatively safe, as with all forms of liposuction, VASER is best performed by trained specialist plastic surgeons.

Depending on which part of the body is being treated with VASER, it may take anything from less than an hour to more than five hours for the surgeon to finish the procedure. Procedure time mostly varies with the size of the treated area and the degree of sculpting or definition required; masterpieces take time. Fortunately, more time taken does not mean a longer recovery. Compared to conventional techniques, the recovery time for VASER is extremely fast. Most patients can be back at work within one to three days. Some have even managed to return straight to work in the evening right after the procedure.

Dr Colin Tham was one of two pioneer plastic surgeons trained by Dr Alfredo Hoyos in VASER hi-definition liposculpture and introduced the technique to Singapore in 2007. Dr Tham is also appointed by the Singapore Ministry of Health as a VASER Preceptor, responsible for supervising and assessing surgeons in VASER.
